Getting (or Staying!) in Shape for the Holidays

Many of us, whether we regularly exercise or not, have a tendency to put on some unwanted extra weight this time of year. Let's face it: It's hard to resist all of those delectable desserts and candies and over-indulge in them. While I'm not suggesting you should go nuts and eat your weight in baked goods, it's ok to treat yourself some. However, if you are wanting to stay your current weight or (in my case) are in the middle of trying to lose some extra pounds already but still want to enjoy some yummy goodies, fact is you're going to need to do something to burn those extra calories back off.

I will be the first to admit that I can be pretty bad about making up lame excuses to NOT workout. I'm just guessing here, but I'm willing to bet a lot of you are too. With that being said, I have compiled a list below of just a few suggestions on ways to get some good, healthy exercise in for different circumstances. Live in a part of the world where the weather is less than amiable during the winter? I've got you covered. Lucky enough to have nice or decent weather most of the winter? I've also got you covered. Regardless of weather, think you can't possibly find the time to get a workout of any sort because of parenting, work, or other responsibilities? I've got you covered too!

Cold Weather
-Workout indoors several times per week. There are plenty of workout dvd's to choose from out there for every level! It is said that working out just 30 minutes several times per week will help with your weight loss and fitness goals significantly!
-Get a membership to a local gym, 24-Hour Fitness, YMCA, etc. This is a great option if you do better in a social atmosphere where you can find like-minded people to help you stay accountable.
-Take advantage of the nice days (if you ever get any during the winter) and do something outdoors, such as hiking, jogging, or walking. It's good to mix things up so you don't get bored with your workout routine and quit altogether. Plus it's nice to just get out and get some fresh air sometimes!
-Shoveling. I know, I know. No one LIKES to shovel, but the next time it needs done look at it this way: It's a GREAT workout!
-Go snow skiing. I've only been skiing once when I was a teenager, but I can attest to it being a wonderful full-body workout...Plus it's fun!

Mild Weather
-Jogging
-Walking
-Hiking (Trekking up inclines is even better to get that heart rate elevated!)
-Tennis (It's a lot more physically demanding than most people think. Trust me. I played for 9 years.)
-Ride a bicycle.

For Parents
-Take the kids on a walk around the neighborhood to look at Christmas lights.
-Sledding. If you join in on the fun, you will have to walk back up that hill too!
-Ice-skating. Most children will LOVE this and it will wear the whole family out, more than likely.
-Snow skiing/snowboarding (yes again) if you have older children. They will have a blast!
-Workout indoors with a dvd. Utilize nap time if you still have children that take naps or invite older kids to "workout" with you. Depending on age and their personality, of course, they will probably find it amusing to do it along with you at least for a little bit...And that way you at least know they aren't somewhere else in the house making trouble. ;)
-Make whatever type of workout or exercise you enjoy doing part of your "mommy time". (or daddy) Every parent needs and deserves a break every now and then. Ask your partner, an older (and responsible) child, babysitter, grandparent, or other relative to watch your child(ren) for an hour at the least. I especially recommend getting out of the house so you are less likely to get interrupted. Go do some yoga in a park or go to the gym with a friend. Anything. Just remember to keep moving. ;)

  1. My daughter in law and I have been exercising every day for about a month. We hope to lose weight and get into shape by April.

    1. That's great! It makes it a little more enjoyable when you have someone to workout with too sometimes. :) Around April is my goal too, but we'll see!
