5 Ways for Kids Under 5 to Help with Yard Work

Hey folks! As parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and more, we all know it can be hard to get certain tasks accomplished when there are little ones around. It can prove to be especially difficult trying to get any yard work or gardening done while making sure a toddler isn't wandering off, getting into an ant hill, or worse! As OCD as I am about certain things, I am still all for having kids help out with grown up tasks. (Plus most kids love to feel like they're helping!) So, here are just a few ideas to keep little ones busy while you get some work done too!

1) Water Plants/Flowers
If you have children closer to 5, you might be able to trust them with a water hose. (Unless they're mischievous and you know they would probably try to spray you. ;) ) For younger kids, a watering can can be just as fun. Especially if you get a kiddy-sized one that is easier to handle. Plus you shouldn't have to worry as much about them drowning your plants since they don't hold as much water!

2) Pull Weeds
If you have a garden or flower beds, your kids may enjoy helping you pull weeds. Of course, you'll have to supervise this task a little more closely than others, but if you're working alongside one another you should be fine. And let's face it: It's a lot easier for little ones to get down on their knees or stoop than us adults!

3) Help Transplant/Re-Pot Plants
I know what you're thinking: Are you crazy?! Plants are delicate. I don't want my kid to accidentally tear them up. True, but they can (and would probably be more than happy to) help with the dirt part. We took some seedlings that needed transplanted to my parents house a couple of weeks ago. Myka had fun and did a good job of dumping the old dirt out of the pots into the garden and bringing the empty ones back to us. You could always let your kids help scoop up the new dirt into the pots too.

4) Pick Up Sticks & Rocks
I don't know about your yard, but we used to have quite a few sticks and rocks we would need to pick up before mowing our yard in Arkansas. I remember letting Myka help me pick up sticks a few times and she was only 1 1/2 then! What kid doesn't love sticks and it helps you get the job done faster. :)

5) Rake
Buy that kid a rake that's their size and put them to work! ha ha Not that you should force them, but if your kids aren't that into it, you could always motivate them by telling them the sooner they help you rake leaves, the sooner they can jump and play in them. ;) If you're really OCD about your lawn, you could always see if they want to help you rake up grass clippings too.

What outdoor chores do your little ones enjoy helping you with?

Let's Shower Mom Giveaway

They say April showers bring May flowers... Well, our April shower is going to shower one lucky mom with over $1200 in prizes! We've brought together several AMAZING sponsors to offer one HUGE prize package:
BabyBjorn: This Swedish, family-owned business started in 1961 and their goal has remained the same: to make day-to-day life easier for parents of small children by developing safe and innovative products of the highest quality for children up to three years old. Their wide assortment of products consists of baby carriers, bouncers, travel cribs, cradles, potty chairs, high chairs and kitchen products. You may be familiar with BabyBjorn's iconic line of baby carriers, but if you don't know about their Travel Crib Light, you're definitely missing out! This is truly one of Thrifty Nifty Mommy and Viva Veltoro's favorite pieces of baby gear - and they've tested a lot of products! The Travel Crib Light can be used with children from 0-3 years of age and is easy to set up in one simple movement. Just open the bag, lift out the crib and the legs fold out. Once you place the soft and comfy mattress inside you have a stable travel crib to use at home or on trips. There are no loose parts or tricky buttons to find. Weighing in at only 13 pounds, it's so easy to take with you, especially thanks to it's included travel bag.
Raindrops: Raindrops is an original, American manufacturing company specializing in beautifully designed and innovative infant and toddler accessories for precious babies since 1936. Raindrops is steeped in American history and began with the founders invention of a waterproof baby covering which was a precursor to waterproof baby pants and much later, even waterproof disposable diapers. Over the years it has evolved into so much more than just baby bibs. They now create blankets, layette wear, baby gift sets, Christening accessories, sleepers, baby bath items, and more. A true American manufacturer, Raindrops cuts, sews, screen prints, and embroiders everything in-house in Downers Grove, IL. Almost everything is made in 100% cotton fabric and will last through multiple children, which makes them a very eco-friendly product, since they are not poor "disposable" quality items filling up landfills. Raindrops wants to give one lucky family one of their beautiful 13 piece, Welcome Home Baby Large Gift Baskets! Inside this beautiful basket you will find: an appliqued footie, an appliqued body suit, a cap, a nice heavier weight, appliqued receiving blanket, a blankie and a bear for baby to cuddle, a bib, a unique Yucky bib bag for soiled bibs and four re-usable wipes. It's available in a pink bear version for girls, and a blue bear version for boys, or a yellow bear version for a unisex choice. This gift set is also available in a medium basket set and a smaller sleep basket set, too.
Combi: Combi USA strives to provide stylish, practical and innovative juvenile products. Derived from the word "combination," Combi refers to the critical relationship between children and their caretakers. They offer a variety of products including lightweight strollers, fun mobile entertainers, feeding products and everything in between! One of their newest items is the Combi Fold N Go Stroller, which will be launching May 14th and will be available in two great colors: Salsa or Black! It provides ultimate convenience while encompassing a lightweight, compact, and portable design. The self-standing stroller features a one-hand quick fold and a sleek aluminum frame. The padded seat includes a 5-point harness system with plush harness pads for your child's comfort. The extra-large canopy with a mesh ventilation window enables you to keep an eye on your child at all times and allows air to flow easily in and out of the seating area of the stroller. Dual front wheel suspension ensures a smooth ride, while the lockable front swivel wheels improve maneuverability. One single step locks both rear wheels simultaneously, making it easy to park and stroll as you wish. A parent cup holder, large basket, and canopy pocket offer storage of essential items right at your fingertips. The Fold N Go is suitable for children 6 months and older and with a weight capacity of 50 pounds, a child cup holder, and a multi-position recline, it's sure to please!
Medi-Pals: Giving your child medication or vitamins has never been easier thanks to Medi-Pals medication dispensers. This product was invented by parents for parents and their kids and it's easy to see why it works so well! Available in 3 whimsical designs (ladybug, frog, or crab) that are fun and familiar to your child, Medi-Pals are easy to use and ensure that the child is always getting the accurate dosage of medicine. Medi-Pals are softer than a straight syringe thanks to the nipple that the syringe snuggly fits inside. This also helps to ensure that no medicine gets lost so the dose is sure to be accurate. The faceplates are interchangeable so you can switch things up to make dosing more fun, and Medi-Pals are dishwasher-safe, and easy to clean. Plus, they're made in the USA! Make sure you check out Thrifty Nifty Mommy's full review the Medi-Pals medication dispensers, and check out her video review of Medi-Pals to see these dispensers in action with an infant and a toddler. You can get your own Medi-Pals on Amazon.
Step2: The Step2 Company, headquartered in Streetsboro, Ohio, is the largest American manufacturer of preschool and toddler toys and the world's largest rotational molder of plastics. Their mission is to be the leading innovator of children's products that build imaginations and enrich the family's celebration of childhood. Step2 knows that when you have a baby, you also amass a great deal of "stuff" - from bibs to onsies to tiny socks, it can be hard to stay organized with all of the supplies you have on hand. That's why they want to give one lucky person a Fun Time Room Organizer! This creative storage center is perfect for parents and kids. It offers two sizes of storage bins for all kinds of storage needs, so you can organize baby's items now, then eventually toys, books, crafts, coloring books and more in this tasteful yet playful design. All bins (9 large, and 2 jumbo) detach for easy and portable clean-up and all surfaces are easy to clean. Plus, there are safety wall anchor included to prevent any accidents. The Fun Time Room Organizer is made in the USA of US and imported parts from China. Winner can choose from Tropical, Pink, or Corvette (based on availability).
BornFree: Developed by 3 dads in 1996, BornFree was a pioneer in making safe baby products, without BPA and PVC. In 2011, the brand was acquired by Summer Infant and they've expanded their line to include way more than bottles. One of their newest (and super innovative) products is the Bottle Genius. The BornFree Bottle Genius takes the fuss out of feeding. This time saving machine creates mixed baby bottles at the perfect temperature, ready to serve. The innovative and sleek design is handy enough to keep in your baby’s nursery, allowing for easy use and clean up. It can easily measure out bottles ranging from 2-10 ounces at the push of a button, allowing for measurements in odd numbers too so you'll never waste formula. Their SmartScale technology automatically portions out formula and water for the perfect bottle, every time. Water is heated on-demand, saving time and energy (plus you can choose whether to serve room temperature water or warm). The Bottle Genius has a clear view water reservoir that holds enough for four 8 oz. bottles and it works with all major bottle brands and powder formula brands.
Summer Infant: Summer Infant was created in 1985 and is dedicated to developing the safest and most innovative products that stand the test of time. Summer Infant is well known for their amazing baby monitors and they're giving away one of their best new monitors to one lucky family. With the Sharp View HD High Definition Video Monitor, mom doesn't need to have eyes in the back of her head. The latest innovation in baby video monitoring technology, this monitor provides the highest resolution of HD video available on the market today. It features a 5.0" color LCD flat screen monitor that offers two-way communication and temperature display. The camera, equipped with a soft glow night light, is able to pan, scan, and zoom in stunning HD quality so say goodbye to grainy images of your precious little one. Trials and Tribulations: Making a Homestead Part 3

Hey folks! Time for yet another update. I actually have happy news this time! I made the picture above several days ago before we got a phone call basically letting us know that we are a lot closer to closing on this place than we expected. So, it really should say "This IS it!"
Things have been moving pretty fast, like I said. We first saw this house a little over two weeks ago, if I remember correctly. We put a bid on it two days later, went back and forth with counter offers a few times, unfortunately, now here we are a week later. We just need to send a few more documents to the loan guy and sign the inspection paperwork (John did his own inspection instead of hiring one since he knows his stuff) and we'll be ready to close! Crazy!

To be honest, I'm still surprised we got this place in time. Like I mentioned in previous posts, houses have been flying off the market as soon as they're listed in the area we have been looking. On top of that, this place has 24 acres. Yes, you read that right. No, I didn't forget a decimal point between the 2 and 4! And it has a creek. And a pond. And lots of outbuildings. And a kitchen with more than 2 feet of counter space. And storage space. And a huge living room. And can you tell I'm really excited?!

Needless to say, I'm very excited about getting on with our lives, because that's what it feels like. We don't plan on moving for a VERY long time after this. We have moved 6 times in 6 years and are VERY burnt out on the whole process! Other than that, we can't wait to get chickens again (which we should actually be able to do this year!), start a big garden, orchard, and more. Plus, even though we live in a really small town right now, we will both be super glad to not have close neighbors any more! John and I are respectively the late 20's/early 30's year old versions of the cratchety old man standing on his porch yelling, "Get off my lawn!" lol
Anyways, to wrap up, hopefully the next time I have a homesteading update for you it will be for something fun, like chickens!

The Dreaded Potty Training

Hey folks! It's been about a year, I think, since my previous potty training post. This time we actually seem to be making progress, though! Until now I've been pretty lax about the whole thing since Myka was still pretty young as far as potty training goes. While I wouldn't go as far as to say I'm forcing her, I've been more adamant about her at least trying to go.
Now that Myka is 2 1/2 (30 months old for those of you who are anal about that), I really felt it was time to start getting serious about potty training...Especially since I've always heard that the majority of kids who wear cloth diapers potty train sooner. Like, a LOT sooner. Maybe that's just a myth or my kid just happens to be a part of the minority. Lucky me, right? I (foolishly) had high hopes she would be potty trained around 18 months. In hindsight, that is laughable. (For us. Bravo to those of you fortunate enough to have easily potty trained kids.)
Anyways, I have also heard a lot of success stories about letting kids run around without pants and a diaper on and potty training that way. (Mostly from you lovely people who comment on my posts on my Facebook page asking about potty training!) I will admit: I thought the whole idea was bat-shadoobie crazy at first. Letting your kid run around naked? There's going to be pee and poop all over everything! However, as time went on, it didn't seem so crazy to give it a try if it really does work. So, I gave it a try. And much to my surprise, it worked for us a lot better than I had hoped!
Given, we are only on our second week, but I still have my fingers crossed. Has everything been perfect? No. We still have days where she wants to wear a diaper more than use the "big girl potty", mostly when she needs to poop. The first week went great, though. No potty accidents at all without a diaper on. She did poop on her bedroom floor the first or second day, but to be honest, I kind of expected that.
My first mistake was showing her the cute little "big girl" panties I bought for her when she got more used to using the potty. I hadn't intended on her wearing them yet, but she really wanted to, so who was I to say no? Needless to say, she had a LOT more accidents wearing the panties than without. I think she just feels that there is something down there so she goes without thinking about it.
Since she started off doing so well, we bought a potty similar to ours for my mom's house since she stays all night many weekends. She actually did a lot better than I thought she would! Mom told me she even pooped in it, which she hasn't even done for us! (Go figure, right?)
To wrap up, I think letting your kid run around naked from the waist down is definitely a good option for potty training if they seem like they are about ready. The biggest drawback I have heard from people who have had success going this route is that their child turns into a nudist for awhile. lol Plus, as some other people have mentioned, hold off on the underwear until they have gone at least several weeks without having many accidents. ;)
How old were your children when they showed an interest in potty training? How did you go about it?

"Create a WORLD YOU LOVE to Live In" Preschool Homeschool Curriculum Giveaway

Hey folks! As some of you may know, I am always on the look out for fun, educational activities to do with Myka and love learning more about different teaching philosophies, especially Montessori and Waldorf. We also love spending time outdoors any chance we get. With that being said, I was super excited to come across the Create a WORLD YOU LOVE to Live In Preschool Curriculum. Why? Let me tell you!
The Create a WORLD YOU LOVE to Live In curriculum incorporates everything I've been looking for in a curriculum when we start homeschooling in a couple of years: It is nature-based, incorporates not only Waldorf and Montessori educational philosophies, but Reggio Emilia as well, AND does not promote screen time at all. (Which we've admittedly been bad about lately.) Plus, it was created by a fellow blogger who homeschools her two children and was a former teacher to boot.
The curriculum includes 30 unique themes with over 750 individual activities altogether! It is chock full of nature walks, sensory experiences, literature, science experiments and much more. You can currently pre-order Create a WORLD YOU LOVE to Live In at a discounted price of $79 HERE. (Release date is May 1, 2015. After this time, curriculum will be full price at $99.) Like previewing things before making a big decision and big purchase like that? You can follow the same link to download a free sample theme!
You can stay up-to-date and check out Leah's (the creator of Create a WORLD YOU LOVE To Live In) blog at Crunchy Farm Baby, Facebook, and Instagram. Buncha Farmers Review

Hey folks! I'm sure many of you are familiar with Buncha Farmers stain remover stick, but did you know they carry a whole array of natural products for yourself and your home? They even offer acne cream and pet shampoo! I recently had the chance to try out their popular stain remover as well as their lavender manuka honey soap and vanilla latte lip balm. Read on to find out what I thought of each!

I'm willing to bet there are few people out there who don't enjoy the scent of lavender, which makes this soap a nice, relaxing way to start your day! I think my favorite thing about Buncha Farmers Manuka Honey Soaps (they also offer Lemongrass and Oatmeal) is that they are not artificially scented: They actually use essential oils! The manuka honey is an added bonus as it is supposed to be one of the most beneficial forms of honey as far as healing properties go.
I really enjoyed this soap while I was able to use it. (I had previously thought I was only allergic to a certain brand of essential oil's lavender, but as it turns out, I just can't use lavender period any more. I get itchy!) It lathers up well and the scent is pleasant, but not overpowering, which I like. I'm not a fan of real strong perfume-y smells.
I have to admit I'm not normally a lip balm fan (or fan of putting anything on my lips), but sometimes it's a necessity during the dry winter months. Buncha Farmers lip balms get the job done because they are full of moisturizing ingredients, including coconut oil and hempseed butter. Plus, the beeswax really helps it stay on your lips a lot longer than most commercial brands, which I like because I tend to drink a lot of water during the day. I don't want to have to be reapplying lip balm every half hour! It also smells fantastic. The only "hang up" I had with this lip balm is that it is on the firmer side, so doesn't spread as easily as some. But, that's always the reason it stays on your lips better. :)

As weird as it sounds, I kind of had fun trying out the stain remover sticker. It was like a science experiment to see what it worked well on and what it didn't work on as well as I had hoped. For the most part, the only thing it didn't work as well as I had hoped on was some set in stains on my mama cloth. But that's ok. They've been there for several washes, so I wasn't expecting a miracle. ;) It does seem to help some with fresh stains.
I also tried it out on this lovely grease stain (I guess you would call it that. It's from using an oily salve on my back to stop itching.) on the back of my shirt. As you can see in the picture below, it did really well on parts of it. While I thought I had covered it pretty good, I'm fairly convinced it was user and not product error that kept the rest of it from getting clean. I think I just need to scrub the heck out of it next time! It did, however, help quite a bit with arm pit stains. (I know. Ew, right? Have I mentioned I have a lot of really old shirts that I probably just need to toss?) Other than the items mentioned above, Buncha Farmers stain remover stick has also significantly brightened up some white wash rags of mine and I'm sure I'll find some more things to try it out on in the future.

Be sure to visit Buncha Farmers website to see what all they have to offer or try out some of the products above for yourself. You can stay up-to-date with them on Twitter.
