Winter Learning Corner

            Hey folks! Now that I'm not working, I've finally had some time to revamp and spruce up Myka's "learning corners". It was long overdue. I've been really bad about putting toys away more often so she doesn't get bored or overwhelmed with so much stuff sitting out, not to mention I haven't had a theme going since Halloween/Thanksgiving.
            I'm sure I've mentioned it before, but I feel like most of this organization/Montessori type stuff is more for me. I know she could care less about cute little themes among other things. However, she doesn't seem to cause as much trouble and stays focused on one thing for longer when "everything is in it's place". So, there's that. :)
            As usual, I get tons of ideas for the crafts I make for Myka on Pinterest. That's where the sensory tree cards came from below. (For once, not that it's a competition, but...I think mine turned out better than the original pin. It's supposed to be a sensory book, but a hole punch is just about the only crafting supply I DON'T have.)

She's trying to hand one of the magnets to me. You know, from across the room and all because I have Go-Go Gadget Arms. ;)

            I think I may hang up the magnet/chalk/dry erase board (how cool is that?!) above the alphabet and numbers at some point. Speaking of the letters and numbers, all of the cute little winter printables came from the 1+1+1=1 blog, which you can check out HERE and it will take you directly to the page I got them from. I might also print out some of the Polar Lands items from the 2 Teaching Mommies page HERE. (I may have a problem. lol)
            Here is a closer look at the snowman alphabet and penguin numbers. There were extra snowmen that you can do whatever you want with, so I decided to use them for colors/matching. The snowmen and snowflakes are living in the green tray on the bottom left at the moment.

            Now, for my next project: Learning to be more patient and reminding myself that my child is only 1 and she is learning a lot more than it may appear! lol

SAHM Again, SAHM Again, Jiggity Jig

            Some of you may have seen the other day that I am a TRUE sahm again. I am staying home...In MY house. And I could not be happier!
            I've been through some interesting times in the past year since having my daughter. Well, as far as the "to work or not to work" debate goes. This time last year I thought I wanted to go back to work, and maybe I really did (you know how hindsight can be). I had already had an interview or two and was actively seeking work. We were really broke this time last year (we always seem to be having a rough financial time in the fall/early winter, and this year has been no different), and as I've said a million times before, I like being able to help out financially.

Yummy Yogurt Toddler Treat

            Hey folks! I'm continuing the baby food theme somewhat today. I felt like sharing this because 1) I am always seeing new yogurt "smoothies" in pouches marketed for toddler and kid snacks at the store and 2) who couldn't use something different to mix their kids meals up with, right? (This would make a yummy, healthy snack or breakfast for an adult too!) So, before you buy those seemingly convenient smoothie pouches the next time you're at the store, don't! Buy these four ingredients instead (you get more for your money anyways):

-plain, all natural yogurt (we get Dannon)

-oats

-fruit of your choice (apples/applesauce and bananas are great)

-cinnamon

-fruit juice (optional)

            This "recipe" isn't an exact science, so that's why I've included pictures. It's all about personal preference too, of course. Just add the yogurt, oats, and fruit to whatever size bowl or container you want (this one pictured is 8 oz.), sprinkle some cinnamon on top (cinnamon makes everything better in my opinion), and mix it up!

            Myka loves this! (Which is saying something since she is SO picky about textures.) It has really helped her get more used to chunky food too. In case you're wondering about the optional fruit juice, we add prune or apple juice sometimes if it seems too thick. (Yes, we use REAL, 100% fruit juice. Not that sorry excuse flavored sugar water they label as fruit juice.) For the fruit, we're usually lazy and use applesauce or bits of banana.

            One of my favorite things about this is it's quick and easy to mix up the night before or in the morning. It can be hard finding quick, healthy options for breakfast. What is your (or your children's) favorite breakfast food?

Baby Food Revisited-Part 2

            Hello again! I'm not going to lie: This was supposed to be included in part 1 of this post, but felt it would have turned into a short novel if I hadn't split it up. I know, I know. I'm too long-winded for my own good and, as you can probably guess, a horrible storyteller. Onward, before I get sidetracked even more...

            If you didn't read the prelude to this post, you can read it HERE. Today we really ARE going to talk about baby food, I promise! As I mentioned, Myka is and has been eating purees for what feels like FOR-EV-ER. Other than making our own, we try to only buy the ones that have no unnecessary extras. Here are my 3 favorites...

            It seems as if almost everyone has heard of PeterRabbit Organics these days, which is great because they are my favorite (and Myka's, I'm pretty sure). Reasons:

1) Simply fruits and veggies. Guess what the Raspberry, Banana, and Blueberry one has in it. You guessed it. (To be fair, it DOES also have organic lemon juice concentrate, but I'd MUCH rather have that than fake ascorbic acid. I don't understand why companies do that. Just add some kind of citrus juice to it instead. But that's a whole other story.)

2) The texture/consistency is perfect. It's not too thick, it's not too thin. That's just my opinion, of course.

3) Yummy blends. Peter Rabbit's mixes really appeal to babies (and adults. The Mango, Banana, and Orange is freaking amazing!)

            Ella's Kitchen is probably my second favorite, although I will admit I prefer these to Peter Rabbit Organics for older babies because...

1) They are thicker and chunkier, which helps get older babies used to eating more solid of food.

2) They come in a wider variety that includes meats. If you had seen Myka's face when we gave her bites of turkey on Thanksgiving, you would understand why this is important to me.

3) Also no unnecessary extras that I can remember being in any of the ones we've gotten for her.

            Sprout is also a good option, especially for younger babies who are just being introduced to "regular food". Why?

1) Sprout pouches (at least the level 2's and under) are very runny. This is actually the main thing I DON'T like about them. Mealtime can already be messy enough. I don't need any help in that department.

2) Interesting combinations. Even for the level 1's, there are some interesting combos with veggies you don't usually see in baby food very often (at least I haven't), such as zucchini, white beans, and potatoes. Variety is good.

3) The levels are pretty accurate for age. Although I complained about the 1's being runny, it makes sense since babies will just be learning to eat food at that stage so you obviously don't want to be giving them something that is super thick or chunky. The 3's aren't NEARLY as bad, so they're acceptable for older babies.

            I think it is great that healthier options for store bought baby food are becoming more readily available. Whether you're a fan of Gerber baby food or not (I think it goes without saying that I am NOT), let's be honest: They have had a monopoly over the commercial baby food industry for quite awhile. In fact, aren't they the ones who started mass producing baby food? Regardless, it's nice to see other (healthier) companies taking away at least some of their business. ;)

Baby Food Revisited-Part 1

            Hey folks! Do you remember my Baby Food Fridays series? I've been meaning to "revisit" it for awhile, but am just now getting around to it after my husband brought the idea up the other day. lol (I hadn't said anything about it to him before. I swear he reads my mind sometimes.)

            I know a lot of you are already at least familiar with them, but I thought I would go over some of the baby food pouches you can purchase from the grocery store. First of all, while I obviously am not, I kind of feel like a baby food connoisseur. Why? Well, let's just say my husband and I both have some food quirks, especially when it comes to textures, and Myka has definitely picked that up from both of us, unfortunately. So, while she is starting to get more adventurous and try "big people food", she still mostly lives off of chunky homemade purees and store bought baby food pouches. (And milk, of course.)

            Now, while the whole homemade baby food making business was fun at first, we hadn't expected her to STILL be eating mostly purees at 14 months old. Needless to say, around the time she turned 1, it was starting to get a little old, as terrible as that may sound. (For the record, I still highly recommend making your own if you choose to go that route instead of baby-led weaning.) While we still do make up some chunkified fruits and veggies for her, we rely heavily on store bought pouches now.

            What's so special about pouches? Nothing. It just turns out that all of the baby food companies that make REAL food with no extras in it just happen to use the pouches for packaging. I am self-proclaimed baby food snob. If it has so much as added ascorbic acid, I'm probably not going to buy it. I am REALLY into reading ingredient labels when it comes to my daughter's food. And that, my friends, is why I feel like a bit of a baby food connoisseur...plus it sounds a lot nicer than "food snob".

Fitness Update!

            Hey folks! You may remember a few weeks ago I had several posts about how I started working out...again...finally. lol I'm happy to report that I've actually been sticking to it for once, so I thought I would share a little update!

Cost of Cloth Diapering vs Disposables

            Hey cloth diapering or cloth curious parents! I'm sure you've probably seen one of  of these cost comparisons at least once in your cloth diaper research, but I still felt the need to share one of my own. Why? Well, while the ones I have seen elsewhere on the web definitely help give you a good idea of how much cloth diapering can cost if you decide to go with pocket diapers or All-in-Ones (AiOs), those numbers are quite a big inflation over the cost of going with covers, pre-folds, and flat-fold diapers, which is what we use. Most sites I have seen suggest the cost for starting out cloth diapering to be around $300. I don't know about you, but that's a little daunting still, even considering how much money you're still going to save by not buying disposables over time. That, my friends, is why I have gone to the trouble of figuring OUR expenses to share with you the cost of using cloth diapers vs. disposables from a more frugal stand point. I hope you find this helpful and be sure to share it with any of your friends who may be considering making the switch to cloth!

Holiday Crafts on Pinterest!

            Many of us, whether we regularly exercise or not, have a tendency to put on some unwanted extra weight this time of year. Let's face it: It's hard to resist all of those delectable desserts and candies and over-indulge in them. While I'm not suggesting you should go nuts and eat your weight in baked goods, it's ok to treat yourself some. However, if you are wanting to stay your current weight or (in my case) are in the middle of trying to lose some extra pounds already but still want to enjoy some yummy goodies, fact is you're going to need to do something to burn those extra calories back off.

My Thoughts on Parenting Books...

            Here's kind of a funny little anecdote to explain a little about what brings the subject of parenting books up:

            Several weeks ago, I posted something on my personal Facebook page about how I had the whole baby thing figured out (even though I already knew what I was doing for the most part) and that I was used to 3 year olds and up, but had no clue what to do with a kid between the ages of 1 and 3. (Which, if you're new here, is where my daughter happens to fall at the moment.) I also said something semi-jokingly about how I wondered if there was a manual on that age out there somewhere.

            Welcome to our last review of Dawn Publications Spring 2014 book releases! I hope you all have been enjoying these sneak previews as much as I enjoyed reviewing the books!             Today's book is The Mouse and the Meadow, which was written and illustrated by Chad Wallace. I have to admit that this was my favorite. I think the main reason for this is because I feel like the author did a great job of writing the story in such a way that you can't help but feel empathetic towards the mouse.

"Seashells by the Seashore" Children's Book Review

            Hey folks! Welcome to day 3 of our Dawn Publications Spring 2014 releases sneak preview series! I have another wonderful book written by Marianne Berkes to share with today titled Seashells by the Seashore.
            First of all, no, it is not about a girl named Sally selling seashells by the seashore. It IS about a little girl named Sue who spends the day gathering shells along the beach to give to her grandma as a gift. This is a fun book to help children learn numbers 1-10 and about different types of shells and where some of them come from.
            One of the great things about this children's book is that it keeps track of the shells as Sue finds more and more. On the left side of the left page, it visually shows what types of unique shells are added to her collection on each page. For example, Sue finds a Periwinkle shell to begin with then a Kitten's Paw which is added above the previous one, and so on and so forth. Not only does it help children learn to count to 10, as I mentioned, but they will also learn how to identify some basic shells and learn the names of them.
            Again, I love the rhyming in this book as well. It flows nicely and I really believe it helps younger children to remember what they're learning. (Even if they don't realize consciously they're learning. ;) )
            Seashells by the Seashore is actually already available in paperback and hardback copies, so be sure to check out its page on Dawn Publications website HERE. Why is Tortle Important?

"The Swamp Where Gator Hides" Children's Book Review

            Welcome back to my mini sneak preview session of Dawn Publications Spring 2014  book releases! We're continuing our theme of special ecosystems today with a children's book by Marianne Berkes titled The Swamp Where Gator Hides. In this wonderfully and colorfully illustrated book, we meet many of the creatures living in the Florida Everglades. Aside from the main focus of the story, which is obviously the alligator, children will also be introduced to egrets, voles, bobcats, white-tailed deer, and many other interesting characters.

Ozeri Instavac Food Storage Set Review

            Hey folks! I'm excited to be bringing you a review of the Ozeri Instavac Food Storage Set today! What better time than the holiday season too, am I right? Who couldn't use some extra containers for all those wonderful leftovers?!

            The Ozeri Instavac Food Storage Set comes with 8 pieces, 4 lids and 4 containers, and are BPA free! As you can see from the pictures, they are clear so you won't have to worry about forgetting which one you put the mashed potatoes in and having to take the lids off of each container until you find them! They are also stain-resistant and waterproof. Plus, one of my favorite aspects of these, is that they are freezer, microwave, AND dishwasher safe!

            So now you may be wondering what the big deal is about the Ozeri Instavac containers and what makes them any better than other brands. Short answer: Several things! Let's start with the most obvious: Instead of just being "air tight" like a lot of food storage containers, Ozeri Instavac containers form a vacuum seal, which is even better! Without going into a full blown science lesson, a vacuum is the absense of an atmosphere or "air". Without "air" in the container, there are no particles, gases, chemicals and other things needed for bacteria, fungi, etc. to live and breed.

            With that being said, there's not really such a thing as a "perfect vacuum". However, since there is LESS air in the Ozeri Instavac containers than almost any other brand out there, bacteria, fungi, and other nasties are less likely to grow. Moral of my story: Your food stays fresher for MUCH longer!

            Speaking of "staying fresh longer technology", each container also has a wave pattern on the bottom to keep fruits and vegetables away from water and juices. Liquids can become a breeding ground for mold and faster food deterioration. No one wants that!

            Another great feature of the Ozeri Instavac Food Storage Set is that on the air valve there is also a date dial. It's a simple little knob that rotates easily. Now all you have to remember is to set it when you put your container in the refrigerator or freezer. I don't know about you, but I'd much rather have to remember to do a simple thing like that than rack my brain over how many days that leftover pot roast has been sitting in the fridge!

            My husband and I both are loving our Ozeri Instavac containers so far. They couldn't have come at a better time to try out either, since it was right before Thanksgiving! Since it is just the two of us (Myka doesn't eat enough "real people food" to count in this instance.) we almost always have leftovers with any meal, let alone a big Thanksgiving dinner! John prepped some onions and celery 3 or 4 days before Thanksgiving and they were still nice and fresh when we went to mix them in with the stuffing and roast with the turkey.

            I almost forgot to mention the different sizes. Starting with the smallest, there is a 3 cup, 6.3, 12.7, and 21 cup container. With such a wide variety of sizes, you're always sure to have one just the right size for your needs. I love when John makes our "granola crack", but it makes an absurdly large batch. The 21 cup container came in handy for storing it this time!

            I also thought it would be fun to share with you a couple of videos of how easy it is to use these containers. Just click on the short videos below to see.

To get a good seal, simply make sure the green valve is down and press down on the container to push extra air out. You will know it's sealed properly when the little nubbin pops inward. Simply lift up on the green part to release the seal! (Don't be like me and forget to do that last part then wonder why it's so hard to get the lid off. lol)
