We're Moving!!! Part 2

Hey folks! In case you missed part 1, you can check that out HERE, which is my list of what I will and won't miss about Arkansas/Hot Springs. Today I'm reflecting on the things I'm looking forward to moving "home" and what I'm not so excited about. Let's start off on the bad and end on the good...

What I'm NOT Looking Forward To:
-Corn. Corn, corn, and more corn. I'm talking corn fields as far as the eye can see. (That's not really much of an exaggeration, either.) Sure, there's groups of trees here and there. It's not totally desolate looking, but still. And don't forget the soybeans. If it ain't corn, it's soybeans. Don't get me wrong: I realize the importance of crops and growing food for our nation, but I'm more of a tree and woods kinda girl.
Field, field, field, trees, field, field, field....

-Allergies. Other than spring, my allergies have gotten SO much better since living in Arkansas. Even in spring when the pine trees are going crazy here and yellow pollen covers everything, they're still not as bad as when I lived in Indiana. I haven't had to take allergy medicine religiously since living here. I'm pretty sure the whole allergy thing ties in with the corn too.
-Humidity. Don't get me wrong: It gets hotter than hell in Arkansas during the summer. (Which usually ranges from May to October. lol) Indiana gets humid too, though, even if it is a different type of humidity. I don't know how to explain it. Again, I blame corn on this too. :D I'm starting to think that delicious sweet corn is the root of all evil. ha ha!
-No forests or hills. I think I mentioned this one in my last post. The southern part of the state has some rolling hills and forests, but we'll likely be living north of Indy closer to where I grew up.
-Below freezing temperatures in winter. Really, REALLY not looking forward to this one. It rarely gets below 30, if that, during the winter here. My birthday is in the middle of January and we have gone fishing on it at least once or twice since we've lived here. I even went hiking several times during the "winter" this year.
-Winter gloom. It is really gloomy in Indiana during the winter, even when it's not snowing. For the most part, there is a seemingly never ending blanket of cloud. Really not looking forward to that either. It's depressing. Literally.

What I AM Looking Forward To:
-Family. This is probably going to sound bad, but I never realized just how much I would actually miss being close to my family. It has been especially hard since we've had Myka...I'm sure they'll be back to driving me crazy, though, within a few months of moving back. lol
-Friends. I miss having people to talk to. My friends from home and I are bad about calling/texting each other, but for the most part I have friends there that we can just pick up right where we left off.
-Camping. Speaking of friends, I called one of them yesterday to let her know we were moving back and she is already talking about us going camping with them this summer. lol (It's kind of our thing.) We haven't been camping since we moved here, oddly enough. We didn't really have the money to the first year or two we lived here, then we had Myka, AND it drastically switches from spring to summer within a week down here it seems. In other words, there's not a very big window of opportunity.
-Snow. Ok. I realize that may sound contradictory since I said I wasn't looking forward to below freezing temperatures, but I'm one of those weirdos who absolutely LOVES snow. Even when I still lived there, I hardly ever got sick of it. (Although this winter may have been different since Indiana received the most snowfall on record for them if I'm correct.) I'm looking forward to Myka getting to play in it too, building snowmen, going sledding, etc. etc.
-Saving money. This, to be honest, is the main reason we're moving back to Indiana and not somewhere, well, that we REALLY like. (Tennessee, Kentucky) Besides being a little overprotective of Myka when it comes to certain things, I just plain and simple do not trust people here. Most of the babysitters we did have while I was still working were flakier than dandruff. (Hence having multiple sitters across a 4 month time period. Ridiculous, right?) There is something to be said about living close to family and people you trust to take care of your child. Please, PLEASE, don't ever take that for granted! Anyway, unless John gets a REALLY good job (fingers crossed for one at the VA hospital in Indy), I am hoping to work at least part-time so we can start actually saving money and not just scraping by from month to month.
-Real parks. There's tons of parks here in town...many of which are in areas I'd rather not take myself to, let alone my child. Most of them don't have areas for really young kids like Myka either. The one in my home town does. It's a pretty decent park for being in such a small town, actually. Plus I can go for walks there and not worry as much about getting ran over!
*sigh* Back when I was skinny and had good teeth. lol That's my friend Lindy behind me. She has a little boy a few months younger than Myka. Now we'll be taking THEM to the park. Crazy!

-Public pool. While I'm not crazy about being in a bathing suit in front of anyone but my daughter and husband, I love the public pool. I don't like swimming in any type of lake, river, ocean, etc. where other living creatures live, eat, and poop. I'm a pool girl. I miss doing laps. It helped me lose so much weight the summer between middle and high school. Plus I'm excited to turn Myka into a water lover too, of course.
-Less "hustle & bustle". Admittedly, I am NOT looking forward to running into people from school I didn't care for, but it is nice to run into people you know at the store, gas station, Pizza Shack, etc. And while I have no desire to live in MY small home town for the rest of my life, I do like small towns in general. Hot Springs' population is only around 36,000 and that is still too big even for me.

We're Moving!!!

...And I cannot begin to express how excited I am! But, I thought I would give it a shot with a fun little list of what I will miss/not miss about Arkansas and what I am excited about/not excited about moving back home to Indiana. *cue the "Back home again in Indiana" song* (The latter will be in my next post.)

What I Won't Miss About Arkansas/Hot Springs
-Rude people
-Terrible drivers
-An overabundance of drug users and pill poppers
-Not being able to meet anyone A) I have anything in common with and/or B) Who isn't a total weirdo. (Excluding the 2 friends I have finally made recently. Go figure I finally made a couple of friends, right?)
-Having a limited amount of stores and fast food restaurants to choose from. (I know I write a lot about green and natural living, but I HAVE to have a Long John Silver's fix every now and then! And if you've never had a butter burger from Culver's, you haven't lived. End of story.)
-Lack of decent jobs (Unless you're in the medical field or a car salesman, you're pretty much screwed here.)
-Bad areas of town
-Curving roads. This one surprises me a little bit because the grid-like road systems in most of Indiana can be pretty boring. But you know what? It's much harder to get lost up there because if you head out going west you're not going to somehow end up going south!
-I'm sure I'm missing a bunch, but I'm getting tired and blanking.

What I WILL Miss About Arkansas/Hot Springs

-Our silly cheep cheeps. I know, we haven't had them that long, but still. We've been so excited about getting chickens and looking forward to fresh eggs and now we're just throwing it all away. :/ However, they will be going to one of our friends that works with my husband who already has chickens, so I know they'll be in good hands.

-Hiking. Ok, so this picture was actually taken at the pumpkin patch last year, but I figured you've been subjected to enough of my hiking pictures. :) If we end up living south of Indy, we will still have access to plenty of recreational areas and state parks. However, if we end up living north of Indy closer to where I grew up at, well, let's just say that the only hiking done around there is through cornfields. ;) (Speaking of which, this was THE saddest corn maze I have ever seen, buuuut I am from one of the top four corn producing states in the country, so ya know...)
-Our house. The first twinges of nostalgia are already setting in just for the fact that this was our first house and the one we brought Myka home to. I do like our house and it would be perfect if it had an extra bedroom, garage, and flat backyard. I just wish it weren't in town.

Don't forget to stay tuned for my next post on what I am looking forward to/not looking forward to with our move!

I have a confession to make: I didn't really understand what all of the hullabaloo over tote bags was until about a year ago. Tote bags have become one of the most used bags in America. They can be utilized for a multitude of purposes, which explains why they have become so popular. These bags are truly an American Classic. For those looking for convenience and ease of carrying things, the tote bag is often the best suited for the job.

The word tote started to be used back in the mid 1700’s and literally means to carry, with technically unknown origins; originally attested in Virginia. The Oxford English Dictionary questions the popular theory of its origin in a West African language (cf. Kikongo tota "pick up" and Kimbundu tuta "carry, load," linked to Swahili tuta "pile up, carry").

Embroidery a form of art that involves decorating a surface, typically fabric, with designs created by using a needle and thread (or yarn) that started out as a form of hand sewing and eventually advanced into a type of machine sewing. The exact origins of embroidery are hard to pinpoint, but there are many early examples that have survived throughout the centuries from ancient Egypt, Northern Europe and the Zhou Dynasty in China. In many cultures throughout history including ancient Persia, India, Japan, Byzantium, medieval and Baroque Europe - embroidery was a sign of high social status and wealth and became a hugely popular art form.

Baby Learning Time: Tissue Paper "Suncatchers" & Painting

Hey folks! It's been quite awhile since a BLT post and I have to admit, I miss them. We've been so busy with chickens, an out of state trip, in-laws visiting etc, I feel like a bit of a chicken myself...Namely, one that's running around with it's head cut off.
I don't have any fun tutorials today, but I am going to share some fun ideas for craft projects with you.

Tissue Paper Suncatchers

Now, I am by no means the first person to come up with this idea. As usual, I found it on Pinterest. I tried it out with Myka for the first time a few months ago with just pieces of yarn and the contact paper. She wasn't all that into it. She didn't want to stick the pieces on so much as pull them back off. lol So, I decided to give it another go recently now that I have tissue paper and here's how it turned out.
Some of you may know that I'm terribly OCD sometimes. I'm happy to report that I only stuck a few pieces on to show her what to do and to try to get her to fill in certain areas. The picture on the left is what Myka had completed. I ended up putting the last few pieces on just so I wouldn't have to waste them or save them for another time. Doesn't this look totally cute from the outside? I'm tempted to frame it somehow. Hmm...Sounds like a new project...

Painting

Ok, so painting isn't all that new or exciting, but we haven't done it for awhile. The few times we do paint, I usually like her to do it with finger paints because I feel like that's an important experience at her young age...Plus she needs to get over her "Ew, I'm messy" issue that I inadvertently created. Anyways, I happened to be painting some paper plates for another seasonal craft, so I thought I would let her try with the sponge brush too.
She seemed to like it quite a bit better than finger painting since she wasn't all "messy". I still think finger painting is important, though. :) Since I already made two paper plate suns myself (that's why we were using those specific colors), I think I will cut hers up to look like a flower. :)

What kind of crafty or fun things have you and your kids been up to lately?

"Mr. Pete, Where Are Your Feet?" Children's Book Review

Hey folks! I have a cute new children's book to share with you today by fellow blogger Katherine Bartlett. Mr. Pete, Where Are Your Feet? is actually inspired by Katherine's bird friends in real life, which I thought made this story even more special!
Mr. Pete, a blue parakeet, is a little different. His human mom always asks him, "Mr. Pete, where are your feet?" One day Mr. Pete starts wondering where his feet really have gone. Some of his toes are shorter than the others and he wonders where they went missing. With the help of his other bird friends, they work together to search around their room and cages to see if they can find Mr. Pete's missing toes.
What did I like about this book?
1) It teaches about teamwork and what it is to be a good friend. Mr. Pete's bird friends are eager and don't hesitate to help their friend search for his "missing toes".
2) It teaches that it's ok to be "different" and that people will still like/love you no matter what!
3) I liked the bright, colorful illustrations as well. They help the story come to life for kids.

You can purchase Mr. Pete, Where Are Your Feet? on Amazon HERE. You can also learn more about Katherine's birds on her blog Our Whiskey Lullaby.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book for review purposes. Regardless, all opinions are my own.

Dropcam was developed by co-founders Greg Duffy and Aamir Virani after Greg's father desperately wanted to figure out which local dog was making a mess of his yard. He began hooking up IP camera's but was having trouble getting the system to work just right and that storing video on his hard drive wasn't an easy or secure solution. Greg was immediately interested in solving his dads dilemma and called his friend Aamir to talk through the problem. They began throwing around the idea around soon connected with tech pioneer Mitch Kapor who decided to fund the initial development which resulted in the launch of Dropcam in 2009. Now Dropcam is widely used around the country to "drop in" on their babies, pets, and even to catch unsuspecting thieves.

The Dropcam Pro is Dropcam's newest of camera models and perhaps their greatest! With a 130 degree field of view, a 8X zoom capability, night vision and audio, the Dropcam Pro is the perfect addition to any home or business to help keep an extra set an eyes on your valuables. One of my favorite things about the Dropcam Pro is that right from your smart phone you can turn the camera on and off and receive text or email notifications of movement and audio! We personally use our Dropcam Pro at home to keep an eye on the dogs when we are out and about and I love that the camera sends me a text message when there is movement, it's very helpful to see if the dogs are at the door barking at something and to watch to make sure no intruders enter the home!

Bristle Blocks & "A Day Off"

I'm sure many a stay-at-home mom can relate to the feeling of just wanting to run away from responsibility and everything else some days. (Maybe even some of you working parents too?) Since the only family we have living nearby are my brother and sister in-law (and they have their own 2 kids), I never get any "breaks". I haven't been away from Myka for over an hour since November when I was really sick one weekend. That, combined with her increasing, er, "toddler behaviors", shall we say, has left me increasingly irritable.
I think it's important for any parent to have some alone time. That being said, I'm bad about "practicing what I preach". However, I finally made myself "take a break" and asked one of our old babysitters to watch Myka for a few hours a few weeks ago. It was just what I needed, but I have to say, 4 hours was not enough! lol
You can judge me all you want, but it was nice to be able to be a little selfish for a few hours. There are so many little things you take for granted before you have kids. I got to eat lunch without sharing it with someone else. I also had the rare latte treat and didn't have to futiley (yep, made that up) explain to a toddler why she can't have any. I was able to actually really look at books at the bookstore. I know some of you will be appalled since I try to be into "natural living", but I even enjoyed a nice soak in the tanning bed for the first time since right before I found out I was pregnant! (Say what you want, but it's about the only thing that really helps clear my skin up and helps with the winter blues too. Also, I have never gone religiously. Looking like a tanned piece of leather is just not a good look. Sorry.)
Speaking of the bookstore, I ended up buying Myka a few things. (That place is about as dangerous as Michael's!) They only had one of the books I was looking for and it didn't seem to be in very good condition (It's one of those board books that has pull out tabs), so I ended up getting some farm animal books because I can't really go wrong with those at this point in time. I got a fun pop up one and the other has the buttons that make animal noises, which I've been looking for forever!
I also couldn't resist a small box of bristle blocks. Does anyone else remember those as kids? I always thought they were really neat, plus they're a little more age appropriate for Myka than Lego type blocks. (Although she does enjoy the MegaBloks, or however it's spelled.)
What were some of your favorite childhood toys? Do you try to find time for yourself if you have kids?

"Sky1-Foundation" Adult Fiction Book Review

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

Hey folks! I finally have an adult fiction novel to share with you today! As much as I enjoyed reading the YA books I've recently reviewed, it was nice to read something a bit more, er, age appropriate, shall we say. :)
Normally I try to steer clear of series books because, well, then you're compelled to read ALL of them. However, when I came across the opportunity to review Sky1-Foundation, I couldn't resist. I've recently become very interested in post-apocalyptic movies and stories, so this sounded like it would be right up my alley!
Nick Burke lives in a future world where living quarters are cramped, disease spreads quickly, and people are constantly struggling to move to a higher Ground than their own. In this future, you see, people don't live spread across the face of the Earth, they live above it in a giant structure that reaches skyward, complete with fake atmospheres. The higher the Ground is from the bottom, the better living conditions are as well.
Nick finds out about an eminent quarantine for "malady unknown" on the Ground he, his wife, and son live in. However, Nick has come across some things in his career as a journalist that most people wouldn't believe...and would probably get him killed if he shared the knowledge with the public. He knows the horrors of what can really happen in a quarantine and, with the help of some acquaintances and friends, races against the clock to get his family to a safer ground before it's too late.
First of all, I have to admit this book wasn't at all what I expected...At least the first 3/4 of it, anyways. I was expecting more of a "run for your life and get out alive" type of plot, which it is later on in the book. The first portion of the book is more like a heist story, though, which isn't my cup of tea. If it is yours, though, then you'll love it.
I also had a hard time following the story and some of the actions that were going on at times. But, it may just be me. Perhaps my imagination wasn't firing on all cylinders.
Overall, I did enjoy Sky1-Foundation and I have a feeling that the 2nd and 3rd books are even better! There are all kinds of different twists going on and I can't wait to see how they come together and find out more about how the place they live in came to be. Plus, I was majorly surprised by how the first book ended, so I'm eager to see how the second one starts.
Be sure to check out the author's page on Amazon HERE to learn more about William Amerman and his books. You can also find him on Goodreads.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
