Homesteading Update 2/20/17

Hey folks! I am still dying for it to get warmer out. How about you? We've been doing what we can around here to gear up for spring.

I'm sure it was a little early, but we kinda sorta already started some plants indoors...And tossed some seeds in certain areas outside. In our defense, most of them (if not all) like the cooler weather. We started some lettuce, broccoli, and spinach indoors in our sunroom. (That's pretty much the only thing this poor, under-utilized room gets used for!)
As far as the seeds we tossed outside, those included clover, wheat, and peas which we're growing to include in our chicken food! Oh! And that little leafy guy on the right is bok choy. It was leftover from dinner one night and we had it lying on top of our compost bowl o'kitchen scraps. It kept sprouting, so we decided to save it. We put it in a bowl with a little bit of water for a few days before we replanted it and it has been doing fantastic! So, that's been a fun little experiment.

We've been saving cardboard since last summer with plans to lay it all out in the garden this year. I was itching for something to do, so thought I would go ahead and put it in the garden Mr.Bruce already has “tilled up” to make sure none of the grass and weeds grow back before it's time to plant. This is as far as I got. Lol It has been so insanely windy, so I said “screw it!” We are still definitely planning on putting it between rows and around individual plants to keep the weeds at bay.

John and his dad got some more crazy vines and whatnot cleared recently. It may not look like much, but John has really gotten a lot of this cleared, especially for as thick with weeds, “pokey bushes”, and vines it was. We're going to use this area for fruit trees and more berry bushes. We're getting there!
Have you been doing anything to get ready for spring?

Our Week of Fun In Pictures

Hey folks! As I'm sure your kids are too, mine have been getting a bit antsy lately being cooped up in the house and, ahem, a little on the annoying side. So, I've been making it a point to get out more. While I enjoy getting out of the house sometimes and socializing, but, being an introvert, it also majorly drains me. I've been more tired than usual this past week and I'm just gonna go ahead and blame it on that! With that being said, I'll actually spare you all the wordiness in today's post and mostly share our (mostly) fun week in pictures.

We finally checked out a kids' gym I had heard of, but just hadn't gotten around to taking the kids for whatever reason. Now I wish we had gone sooner! It's similar to a place we had right around the corner from us in Arkansas. Super fun! I'm glad Myka liked it so much because I ended up having to buy a pass because I didn't have any cash on me and they wouldn't accept my card for just the one day admission fee. -_- Annoying, but I understand why some places do that. Plus, like I said, it worked out. Now we've already paid for going 5 more times!

I have loosened up a LOT as far as messiness goes since having Ripley, so I occasionally let Myka go run through the giant puddles at the end of our drive after it rains. On the right, I can't believe I actually got my camera to take a picture at the exact moment Ripley was making her rotten face. Actually, I chose to include these two pictures because both of their faces crack me up. :D

We went to the homeschool group's Valentine's Day party last Thursday. We got there early (I know! It's a Valentine's Day miracle!) so we wouldn't have to walk far because it was super cold that day and, quite frankly, I still don't have my shit together very well when it comes to taking two kids out in public by myself. There. I said it. Anyways...
We got there early, so we were able to play upstairs on the "toy floor" for a bit. This was at a community center, by the way. Then we went downstairs to the gym for the party. Myka had an awesome time. I literally wished I had a human-sized clam shell that I could crawl inside and tune everyone and everything out because there were SOOO many people there. Mostly kid people. Kid people that are like my kid person who have way too much energy because they've been locked away indoors for too long. I could NOT leave fast enough, but we did stay almost the entire time, much to my chagrin. Do I get mommy points for that?

What fun things have you done with your kids lately?

Make a "Nursery" in Your Regular Coop

baby chick area within coop

Hey folks! Unless you've been watching our homesteading videos on YouTube (yes, shameless plug), you probably haven't heard about our little problem with our chickens. One day when I went to let the girls out in the morning, one of our Barred Rocks and Bertha, one of our Buffs, were “trapped” in with the chicks. (See below for our old chick area.) After I got their dumbasses out I found that two of the Buff chicks had been hurt pretty bad. Like, bad enough I'm surprised they lived. One had a nasty wound on it's butt and the other had an open wound where one of its wings met it's body. You could see things you shouldn't be able to see. It was not pretty.

The old area

So, I found some old window screens in one of the garages and put them over the chicks' area in hopes of deterring the big girls from getting in there and picking on the little ones. Well, a few days later one got in again and all of their fencing and stuff was knocked over and half of the chicks had gotten out and were hiding in another roll of fencing. * sigh * And, someone had finished off the chick that was hurt really bad. We're pretty sure it was Bertha since she's kind of like queen biotch and it was only the Buff chicks that had gotten picked on (except one; weird, right?), but regardless, we needed to do something to prevent this from happening any more! So here's what we did...

I'm not crazy about the top part, but sshhh. Don't say anything to John. We can make it better/easier to use eventually. It's keeping the big girls out so far and that's what really matters! On the right I just wanted to show where we cut out the fence so we can still hang the heat lamp.

Given, John did most of the work, I just helped, but easy peasy, right? It only took about half an hour to set up. There are lots of other (nicer) versions of building something like this out there, but we used what we had. Speaking of which, don't forget! It's always better to use hardware cloth with chickens as opposed to chicken wire (what's around the outside bottom) because chicks can get their heads stuck in it. We've never had a problem with this, but it's a “thing”, evidently, so be aware!

Have you ever had any issues with your older chickens picking on chicks? What did you do to “fix” it?

We're On YouTube!

Hey folks! For those of you who may not have seen it or do not follow me on Facebook, I'd like to make the announcement that I have started a YouTube channel for the blog! I'm very excited about it as it's been something we've been thinking about doing for awhile.
Like the blog, it will be a random mix of the things that interest me: homesteading, homeschooling, product reviews, crafts, books, etc. AND, I am on a mission this year to get out and explore Indiana more, especially since we have a state park pass now, so I will be sharing our adventures on there (and possibly here on the blog too depending on how interesting the trip is ;) ) as well!
If you are so inclined, you can check out and follow our channel. Here are a few of my favorite videos so far, plus you get an idea of what to expect. :)

Don't be surprised if the channel is a little homesteading heavy at first. Making “farm videos”, as our 4 year old calls them, is something I've been wanting to do for awhile. But, I promise there WILL be more kid/family-related things and adventures to come!

What would you guys like to see on the channel?

The Importance of Protein (FOR Chickens)

eggs in basket

Hey folks! You may have noticed by now that when it comes to our “farm stuff”, we do a lot of learning by trial and error. What farmer or homesteader doesn't, right? Don't get me wrong. We research the basics and what we feel we need to know on things, but, as with most things on life, it's never quite that simple, is it?
One such thing we've discovered (well, me, at least) recently is the importance of protein in your chicken's diet. I'm willing to bet about half, if not more, of backyard/small operation chicken keepers out there buy some form of commercially produced chicken feed, so not much thought is given to this, more than likely. With us switching from store-bought feed to mixing up our own and the daytime being shorter, it's become glaringly clear just how important protein really is in our flock's diet!
If I remember correctly, we mixed up our first batch of feed in early December so obviously, the days were pretty short by then. I didn't really think anything of it when the girls egg production went down even more since I've read plenty of times that this is natural during the winter. Anyhow, John did mention after we started feeding them the new stuff and we were only getting ONE egg a day, if that, that we needed to add some form of protein to their diet as what we were using in their mix did not contain enough.
Well, John had planned on ordering some fish meal to add to their feed for protein, but evidently unless you buy high-grade stuff, it ends up making their eggs taste like fish. I obviously don't know if this is true or not since we never tried it, but that's just what John found in his research.
As usual, some time went by and we kind of forgot about it/put it off, but John did eventually research some things we could add for extra protein. We started out by adding a packet of plain ole gelatin powder to their feed each day. Someone, I won't mention names, is bad about communication and didn't tell me I needed to put it in everyday to make a difference in their egg production. (Now I know.) But, a few days after we had been consistent about putting it in, I was surprised to FOUR eggs when I locked the girls up for the evening, which equaled FIVE for the day as there was one waiting for me that morning!
We also recently purchased some lentils as they are supposed to be high in protein too. We just started those today, so I'll have to let you know how that goes. Not surprisingly, most of the girls weren't crazy about them when John tossed them out there dry, but once I hosed them down some they started gobbling them up!
As I mentioned in my post on switching to our own feed, we plan on replacing some of the items in our feed, eventually, with others that are higher in protein too. We are planning on growing a massive amount of peas, from what I can tell (ha ha), so we will be replacing the cracked corn with those as well as replacing the oats with wheat. (To be honest, they don't seem to care much for the oats anyways!)

Do you mix your own chicken feed? What do you use for added protein in their diet?

Learning Fun with the Alphabet Hop Game!

alphabet hop game

Hey folks! Have I mentioned that trying to do homeschool preschool with my 4 year old has not been easy?! I would be lying if I said I haven't been second-guessing the whole thing or am disappointed that it's not been more “fun” like I envision preschool should be because Myka is so stubborn! But, I'm not giving in yet and am still going to cross my fingers that it's just partially due to her age and the fact that she learns like her father and not me.
One of our (my?) obstacles has been that she learns best by getting her whole body involved. I guess you could say she's a kinesthetic learner. Makes sense for small children as all kids like to move around, right? But it makes learning certain things difficult. With that being said, I've been looking up ways I can help her learn what she really needs to work on: the alphabet.
I found a few ideas on Pinterest, of course, that I thought she might like, but most of them are more geared towards warmer weather as they're activities that should really be done outdoors. She kept telling me she wanted to do a “jumping game”, so I got the idea for this game below from one of the lessons/games on her Reading Eggs program.
I thought I was pretty clever for thinking of this because you can tailor it to whatever you want or need your child to work on: letters, numbers, letter sounds, colors, etc. etc. Added bonus: Even if your child isn't a “full body learner”, they are getting some gross motor practice and working on their coordination as well!

What You'll Need:

-post-it notes or index cards
-a pen
-tape (optional)
-an open floor space

*Pick one number, letter, consonant sound, etc. and write it on 6 (or however many you want depending on how big you want to make the game) post-it notes.

*Also write out at least two more words, letters, etc. for each row. You can see what I mean in the pictures. :)

alphabet game close up
She was having some trouble with the "at" sound, finding the word "mat", in particular, on one of the games on Reading Eggs, so that's what we started off with this day.

*Make sure you mix them up, of course, so your child can hop around and have fun too!

*Once your “game area” is set up, tell your child how the game works. Start at one end and hop from “S”, for example, to the “S” in the next row and so forth until they reach the other side! To make it a little more fun, I like to tell Myka that it is a pond and the post-it notes are lillypads. :)

4 year old playing alphabet hop
Is not wearing pants when you're 4, like, a thing?

What kind of games or fun activities do/did you use to help your kids learn the alphabet?

Homesteading Update-Moving Mr.Bruce & Prepping for Spring

Hey folks! I hadn't planned on it, but here we are again with another homesteading post this Monday. :) I can't help myself. We're excited for spring to get here already. I blame the unseasonably warm weather we've been having!

As I've mentioned before, Mr.Bruce, our American Guinea Hog, has done a MUCH better job of tilling our garden for us than anticipated. With that being said, we probably should have and could have moved him much sooner than now. My in-laws are supposed to be coming over tomorrow to help move his fence and his house. (It will be SO much easier with 4 of us, I can just feel it!) Since we had to remove his harness because he's gotten so damn big over the past few months (he's a little over 8 months old now!), our method of moving him should be interesting. This will consist of getting him back in his “baby pen” and pretty much scooting him along. Ha ha Good thing we aren't moving him far from his current “pasture”.
Besides being eager for our tax return this year so we can hopefully use some of it to do some more repairs on the house, I would also really like to “invest” in a lady friend for Mr.Bruce. This has always kind of been the plan so he has a friend, but the more we read/watch about American Guinea Hogs and how rare they are and how much you can make from selling piglets each year, we are becoming even more anxious to get him a lady friend! (You know what's awesome about Guinea Hogs? You don't have to separate the males from the females after they have their babies like a lot of animals!)

John also started working on a mini-greenhouse a month or so ago. Unfortunately, the plastic he got for it was thinner than he expected, so I think he's waiting to get some sturdier stuff to finish it or double layer it with the thin when he gets time or something. I don't really know, to be honest. Ha ha I'm sure it will get done before spring, though. ;) I'm looking forward to having extra room (and more heat!) for plant starts this year. We always start more than we need, too, so hopefully I can make some extra money selling some through a local homesteading group on Facebook too!

I'm not sure why I put it off for so long because it wasn't NEARLY as bad as I thought it would be, but we finally got around to cleaning the sunroom out the other day. This is where we usually keep our plant starts and do our “experiments”. Ha ha We needed to dump a bunch of stuff out that didn't work (told you; experiments) and there was just a bunch of random stuff that needed to be dealt with. It was one of my winter to-do projects and now it's nice and ready for planting!
We've bought a ton of seeds already (in fact, as soon as I write this I'm making a master list of what all we do have). We even let Myka pick out what she would like to grow in her own patch of garden this year, so that should be interesting. She's not very good about following through with things because, you know, she's FOUR.
Are you already planning for the spring too? What are your current projects or goals?
