Week in Photos-12/2/15

Hey folks! Last week was interesting. We finally had a laid back week for the most part, but we had some sadness too. Monday, when Myka and I got home from a playdate, we found our mama cat dead in the front yard. We're guessing she probably got into a fight with some sort of critter. Friday morning I found one of our kittens, Frodo, dead in front of our main garage. :( My husband thinks he may have accidentally ran over him when he left for work, so that just makes it even worse because now he feels extra bad.

Other than that, we had a nice, relaxed Thanksgiving dinner at our house. It was just the three of us and my parents. Here are some cute little place holder turkeys Myka and I made. I'm so glad we have a library card now because I found this idea in a craft book in the kids section!

I am normally a major grinch when it comes to Christmas, but I've gotten a lot better since having Myka. I finally got around to making her a felt tree she can redecorate over and over. She really liked it! We actually got our real tree up this week too, but I'm not ready to take any pictures of it yet. It's kind of sad looking, in my opinion, because we had a snow globe (why it was with the ornaments I don't know) break and ruined the majority of ornaments. So, now I at least have an excuse to make more!

Myka talked me into going for a walk down to the creek one day last week. We had just started on the trail when we came across this guy below. I was not pleased. It was 50 degrees out, fgs. I thought it was dead at first. Needless to say, we walked elsewhere because I am still not a fan of snakes, no matter how big or small, dangerous or not they are!

Santosha Birth & Wellness Review

Hey folks! I'm excited to share this business with you today that provides both great products and services (especially if you live in the Saint Paul, Minnesota area)! Santosha Birth and Wellness strives to provide services and natural products for women in the “childbearing season of life” that oftentimes go unmet, such as flower essences for mental and emotional wellness, herbal concoctions such as pregnancy tea and healing bath herbs for after birth, and even placenta preparation for locals.
Jaime Fleres, the founder of Santosha Birth and Wellness, was kind enough to let me ask a few questions for my own curiosity and so you can learn more about her and the company!
  1. What inspired you to combine many of your passions to form Santosha Birth and Wellness?

The simple answer is being pregnant with and birthing my daughter really inspired me to launch this business. I have always been passionate about women's health and wellness on all levels. Enjoying the resources available to me during my childbearing journey, and noticing where I could have used more support, was part of my inspiration. Another part was wanting to share with others resources that can support an empowering and deeply nourishing experience of childbearing. I believe that the journey into motherhood offers us a tremendous opportunity to learn and grow, to be supported by others (including nature), and to go within. I think flower essences are an amazing ally for the childbearing season on the deeper levels of the experience that aren't always acknowledged but that are so, so important to our lives as women. I think our herbal allies can offer so much support through this season of our lives, support which many of us do not know is available to us. I wanted to make traditional and natural healing wisdom available to more women.
  1. I've noticed placenta encapsulation has grown increasingly popular over the past several years. In a nutshell, what are the benefits of ingesting your own placenta?

In a nutshell, emotional support, breastfeeding support, and postpartum healing support. Many women I have worked with appreciate the emotional effects of taking their placenta. I can speak from personal experience that taking my placenta after birth helped to mellow out the extremes of my high and low emotional states (mostly hormone driven and the effects of a life radically altered). My placenta helped me feel at a level that was manageable for me, others report that placenta consumption has helped them mitigate the "baby blues" and perinatal mood disorders. Many women also enjoy how placenta consumption helps promote a healthy milk supply. Third, placenta consumption can really help to speed and support healing after birth. For example, it contains bioavailable iron, so important for women who are depleted and/or have lost a lot of blood in birth. It also contains a multitude of other beneficial hormones and nutrients made by a woman's body. The wisdom of our bodies is incredible-- I am awed in the way that a woman can build this tremendous organ that so deeply nourishes and supports both baby and mama.
  1. What can customers/clients expect to gain from using your products?

Put simply, the intention behind all of our products is to help people feel better and to deeply support women as they move through the childbearing season of life. Its a big one! All of our products are sourced from the best raw materials possible, so customers get the highest quality products. It is my hope that each of our products helps people feel more supported in their lives, their healing, and their overall wellness. I love that I am able to help offer herbal resources that not only support mom, baby, and others on a physical level, but that also deeply support people on the emotional and psyche levels. This is where true and lasting change occurs.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now that you know more about Santosha Birth and Wellness in general, let's get a more in-depth look at some of their products! I had the opportunity to review both their Tea for Two:Mama Brew and Sore No More Massage Oil. I love trying out new natural products, especially when pregnant!

Naturally, since I am getting to the end of this pregnancy, my back has started hurting more and more, amongst other aches and pains. The Sore No More massage oil has been a great help! (Plus it gives me a good excuse to make my husband give me back massages. ;) ) Specifically, it is for stress, injury, and trauma and is recommended for use with massages, in compresses, and baths. As I mentioned, I've primarily used it as a massage oil for my back and hips. Between using it and doing yoga, my back feels a lot better!

I love that there are just a few, simple ingredients in Sore No More: anica montana infused in olive oil, non-GMO mixed-tocopherols (vitamin E compounds naturally found in nuts, veggies, etc), bergamot essential oil, and flower essences of star of bethlehem, arnica, and dandelion. I personally like the subtle, but nice scent the bergamot gives this oil. I highly recommend this for pregnancy pains or any time!

I love herbal tea, so I was excited to try out the Tea for Two: Mama Brew as well. It is formulated to be good for all sorts of things. As the package states, it is “full of vitamins and minerals crucial for mamas. It assists in conception, eases pregnancy complaints, prepares body for birth, supports nursing, promotes calmness, and fosters overall health.” What more could you ask for?

Again, I love that there are few ingredients as I'm a firm believer that “less is more” in most cases. Mama Brew contains red raspberry leaf, nettle leaf, alfalfa, oatstraw, rosehips, chamomile, rooibos, and lemon verbena. While I didn't think it tasted terrible, it is very...grassy tasting? Which makes sense because of the alfalfa and oatstraw. I kind of wish there were more lemon verbena in it to cover up the straw-y taste. It's tolerable, though, and if you really want I'm sure it would be good with a little honey added. It's good for me, so I'm not complaining too much. ;) I am planning on a VBAC with this baby, so I need all the help I can get, physically and as far as stress goes!

Week in Photos-11/25

Hey folks! It's been another eventful week around here, though we did have a few days of semi-relaxation. We had a play date Monday at a place called Jump-N-Joeys in Bloomington, IN. It was Myka's first time doing the whole bouncy house thing, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Actually, I thought she'd be too afraid to try them, to be honest, but she ended up loving it! ...At least after the first couple of times she went down the big slides. She had what could only be described as a look of sheer terror on her face those times. Being the terrible person that I am, I wish I had gotten a picture. :D

The deer right now (hunting season) have just been taunting us. They are always so close to the house! We have a bow and we have a shotgun, but it's kind of hard to sneak up on them in the open. Pretty sure our three nosy kittens don't help matters.

I can't remember what day I took this, but the colors of the sky and the way it was making everything look I just had to take a picture. It was about as yellowy and weird looking in person as the picture shows.

That's all for this week! If you celebrate Thanksgiving, I hope you have a wonderful turkey day!

Prenatal Yoga: Feeling Good!

Hey folks! I'm sure you've noticed by now that I prefer to take a natural approach when it comes to lots of things. However, I have a couple of confessions to make: I used to smoke for quite awhile considering my age and I still enjoy adult beverages. Needless to say, those were some not so great choices when it came to stress relief. And I've been really stressed out lately. Obviously I can't use either as a “crutch” at the moment since I am pregnant (not that that's a bad thing!), so I pondered what I could do as a “better for me” alternative. Then it dawned on me: prenatal yoga!
I have to admit that until recently I always viewed yoga in general as kind of goofy. Yoga is just for hippies and hipsters, right? Well, I'm definitely not a hipster so maybe I am turning into a hippie because yoga just seems like the right thing to do right now. Not only was I in desperate need of some natural stress relief, I figured it would help with my back pain as well.
Given, I've only been doing it for several days, but I can already notice a difference. Even after the first time I did it I felt noticeably less uptight/tense physically. As I'm sure a lot of other people do, I tend to carry most of my stress in my neck and shoulders. I can't believe how much more relaxed I feel in these areas since starting yoga! I even had a somewhat tense drive in the pouring rain to the doctor the other day (over an hour drive!) and I didn't even get uptight in my arms, neck, and shoulders like I normally do when I have to drive in the rain. Amazing!
I've also noticed that it has helped with my pregnancy back pain and I just feel more calm in general. For some reason with this baby, instead of my lower back hurting it has been the middle of my back for awhile now. While it still does get a little stiff during the day, it's not nearly as bad as it was. And, while it might sound contradictory, even though I've been a hot mess emotionally from things I'd rather not go into right now, I still feel more calm. At least not quite as quick to get irritated.
On top of just feeling better physically, I like that I am learning moves/positions that can help with pain relief during labor since I am bound and determined again to not have any drugs! And, even more than that, I am learning things that can help get baby into a good position for birth too!
So, even if you still have your doubts, give prenatal yoga a chance. (Or regular yoga if you're not pregnant!) I rented a dvd from the library to give it a try and am glad I did. It's something I hope to continue after baby starfish gets here too when I need a little time to myself to relax and let my mind wander. :)

Yoga for Your Pregnancy DVD

Prenatal Yoga Routine on YouTube-I've only done this one once. I found it to be more intense? than the other one. While it's still definitely doable, if you're out of shape like me I recommend trying the dvd above first.
