Celebrate Spring With Peaceable Kingdom!

             Hey folks! If you're not familiar with Peaceable Kingdom, they offer a wide array of games for young children, stickers, diaries, Valentine's, and more. We recently had the opportunity to try out some of these items to celebrate spring with. It was a hard decision with games like Sunny Day Pond, Count Your Chickens!, and Farmer's Market Match Up Game & Puzzle to choose from, but we eventually settled on Zoo Animals Match Up Game & Puzzle and Alphabet Bingo! Like any 4 year old, Myka loves animals and puzzles AND she really needs to work on learning her letters, so I thought these would be the best choices for us!

Alphabet Bingo!

Ages 4+ 2-6 Players

             Myka seems to get bored with things easily, so I was happy to introduce her to a new kind of game...Plus she yells a lot anyways without realizing it, so I figured yelling out “Bingo!” would be fun for her. ;) Here's what we liked about the game:

*Nice sturdy playing cards/boards.

*A nifty little bag to keep your letters in.

*The letter pieces show the letter on one side and a picture that starts with that letter with the word written underneath on the other side! (This was my favorite thing.)

*Even if she's not very familiar with a letter that is called, she can still find it herself on her own board.

*Makes learning the alphabet much more fun!

*The game goes quickly and it's fun for the whole family to play together.

Zoo Animals Match Up Game & Puzzle

Ages 2+ 2-4 Players

             Myka is at that weird age where it seems hard to find puzzles suitable for her. She's got all of our wooden puzzles down pat, but she needs a LOT of help with jigsaw puzzles. But, she loves doing them and keeps asking to go to the zoo, so this game will have to do for now. ;)

*Sturdy pieces

*Colorful, but realistic looking pictures. (I much prefer realistic pictures to cartoon versions and so do both of my kids most of the time.)

*Myka is TERRIBLE at memory games (though I'm pretty sure she “doesn't remember” just to infuriate me sometimes), so hopefully this will make exercising that part of her brain fun. ;)

*I think the puzzle is just the right amount of easy for her with it's square pieces and border running along the outside.

             Overall, we were satisfied with both games and it's nice to have some new ones to choose from and mix things up! They are both priced reasonably as well at $12.99 for Alphabet Bingo! Sorry for Any Confusion...

             Hey folks! So I feel like this post is probably totally “wasting my breath”, so to speak, but we feel the need to put it out there anyways.

             Last week, in case you missed it, I shared a post on how we created our own rabbit hutch and saved a lot of money by going the DIY route as opposed to buying one from the store. Seems totally benign, right? While I did receive (mostly) positive comments on social media on this post, I got a lot more crap for it than I expected too. And by “a lot more than I expected” I mean any, to be honest.

             Truth be told, I don't receive many comments, whether it be directly on my post, on social media shares, or otherwise. So, when I receive any kind of feedback, solicited or not, it's still a surprise to me. Before we proceed further, I feel like I should get this off my chest: I am not one of those people whose emotions hang in the balance according to what people say about me or anything related to my blog on social media. Social media is a great tool, don't get me wrong, but I feel like a lot of people get caught up in it and take it too personally sometimes when they shouldn't...For their own good, if nothing else.

             I realize that not everyone is going to agree with me at any given time, and that's ok! You know what they say: If we were all the same, the world would be a boring place! And, to get closer back to this specific subject, I don't have a problem with negative comments...If they're founded. To each their own, right? I can take them with a grain of salt and (healthily, in my opinion), laugh most of them off...But, admittedly, some may still perturb me deep down inside, whether I like to admit it or not. With that being said...

             I'm sorry if there was any confusion. Again, I'm pretty sure the negative comments I received on my rabbit hutch post were from people who do NOT follow me regularly, but I want to clear things up anyways...Just in case.

             We are not keeping the rabbits as pets. They will be used for meat. We live on a farm. We are homesteaders. Every animal we keep has a purpose. There is no way in heck we would spend the extra money for fencing, shelter, etc. and feed this many extra mouths just to keep them as pets. Sorry, not sorry.

             We don't keep the chickens just for eggs. Some day they will provide us (or someone else) with meat. We do not keep the pigs just to till up land for us. Some day they will provide someone else with excellent bacon for their breakfast. We will also be selling our future piglets for extra income, likely to help with other homesteading projects, like expanded pastures for said pigs and chickens. Even the cats serve a purpose. They catch mice!

             So, if there was any confusion about what it is exactly we do around here, I apologize. I hope this clears things up. If you are a vegetarian or are just not on board with the whole raising and killing your own animals for meat business, I understand. But please, don't assume things about others unless you know the whole story first. And certainly we can still be friends. You just may want to avoid our future homesteading posts. :)

The Library Snob-Part 1 (And Library Easter Party Fun!)

             I have recently come to realize something about myself: I am a library snob. I'm not sure when it started exactly, but it seems like it has been going on most of my adult life. It is what it is. I guess I just have particular tastes and certain expectations from libraries. ;)

             With that being said, I am always excited to check out new libraries! It's fun for me, especially with the kids. I love exploring the children's section as much as they do! Is that weird?

             We recently visited a library for the first time in one of our adjacent counties. It takes about 30 minutes to get there, which isn't too big of a deal for us. Have I mentioned we kind of live in the sticks? We only live about 6 miles outside of our town, but it only has a population of a little over 2,000, so you get an idea of what and how many businesses, restaurants, etc. there are close by. But, I'm getting off topic...

The Party

             To make a longer story short: I happened to see that there was an Easter party scheduled that morning for the library in Linton, we hurried and got dressed and ate, aaaand were still late because 1) I have terrible time management skills, but mostly 2) My GPS took us to the wrong place! (Funny, but not funny story, we went in the municipal building my GPS took us to and asked for directions. We were only a block away on the other side of the main road. -_-)

             We were almost half an hour late by that point, so I didn't feel like intruding on the party and having everyone stare. Lol It worked out, though, because the Easter bunny was there, so Myka and Ripley got to hang out with him some at their own pace. Then the preschool program that was having the party came out of the meeting room to hunt for eggs in the children's section and one of the ladies was nice and invited us to join them and even gave the kids some plastic bags to collect their eggs in.

             After that was over, everyone started milling back into the meeting room and Myka wanted to go, of course, because there were lots of kids. I asked one of the librarians if it was ok, did we need to sign up?, we meant to come for the party, but were super late, blah blah blah, and she was very nice about it. All the kids were opening their eggs, so Myka munched on some Fruit Loops in hers and there were prize vouchers and coupons in some as well! I don't know who puts this group or that party together, but they were very generous with the prizes, I thought. There was sidewalk chalk, bubbles, books, all kinds of stuff to choose from. Much to my surprise, Myka chose a book. Proud mom moment. Ha ha (Like we don't have 500 things of bubbles and chalk already!)

Build Your Own Rabbit Hutch!

             Hey folks! It's finally time to really talk about that rabbit hutch we were making! Now, before we begin, please don't yell at me. I don't have exact measurements. We didn't follow any plans and just kind of eye-balled a lot of it. But, I can give you some approximate measurements. I'm hoping the take away from this post is gaining the inspiration and confidence to build a rabbit hutch yourself if you're thinking of keeping rabbits soon. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than buying one from the store!

What You'll Need:

-2x4's

-hardware cloth

-chicken wire (or other appropriate fencing material)

-fence nails

-drill

-long screws (at least 3”, I'm guessing. Will try to remember to double check what we used.)

-hammer

-wire cutters

-2 hinges

NOTE: First off, I want to start this off by saying that, overall, our hutch's dimensions are roughly 4 feet tall and 2 feet wide by 5 feet long. I hope that helps. There is nothing special about the 2x5' part. We did that according to the size of our hardware cloth, to be honest.

*We started off by putting our bottom/base frame together. Again, roughly 2'x5' according to the size of our hardware cloth. The slats in-between are important so that your hardware cloth doesn't sag much. We just used some pieces of an old board we had lying around for the slats.

*Once you have these bits screwed together (make sure your screws are not sticking out anywhere that your rabbits could accidentally snag and hurt themselves!), roll out your hardware cloth and secure with the fence nails. Be sure you keep it as taut as possible! Cut or hammer down any excess hardware cloth hanging over the edge. In case you're wondering, “Why hardware cloth?” it's because the holes are small enough that the rabbits can get secure footing and feel safe, but big enough that their poops should drop through.

*I really dropped the ball on taking pictures of this next part, so I apologize. You are going to make another frame that is the same size as the first one, but you don't have to worry about the slats or hardware cloth since it will be at the top.

Evidently rabbits will chew through wood if you let them, so for this part we started out by wrapping the chicken wire around the bottom base so that it will end up being on the inside and no wood will be exposed. You'll secure this in place with the fence nails as well. Again, be sure to keep this as taut as possible as you secure.

This is actually where you really need to figure out how deep you need/want the inside of the pen. I'm not sure why we made ours so deep, but it was a mistake as I am pretty short. Ha ha I think we just did it according to how tall the chicken wire was. Anyhow, you will secure the other end of the wire to the top frame. You may need to cut and hammer some excess wire for this part.

Finally, you are going to attach your legs to the outside! Again, ours were roughly 4' tall.

*For the lid, we decided to use some extra siding we had leftover from when we did some repairs to the house before moving in. It's nice and heavy and keeps the rain out. There are lots of other ways you can make your “roof”. You may consider slanting it too if you plan on having it outside in the elements. But, here's a look at what we did.

*Even if you don't have a roof that's nearly as heavy as ours, you might consider putting a “kickstand”, or whatever you want to call it, on for the roof to make an easier time cleaning and whatnot.

            That's it! It's not as bad as it sounds, but it did take longer than expected at the same time...That may be largely due to the fact that it's hard getting anything done outside with two young kids. ;)

BestBottom Swim Diaper: First Impressions

             Hey folks! Swim season will be upon us before we know it! Recently, a sale on swim diapers in one of my emails caught my eye. I contemplated ordering one because it was super cheap, even for a regular cloth diaper, let alone a swim diaper. Then, as it usually goes when I'm online, I somehow managed to fall down another “rabbit hole” and discovered that BestBottom now makes swim diapers! I don't really stay up-to-date on cloth diaper stuff much any more so I don't know if this is a new development, but I was pretty excited since they are the main brand we use daily!

            Of course, I had to buy one. We still have an AppleCheeks swim diaper from when Myka was a baby, but I thought an extra one would come in handy this year. I really want to go to the splash pad, pool, lake, etc. more this summer. And by more I mean at all, really. Have I mentioned I kind of dropped the ball on all that fun stuff I had planned last summer? Anyways...

             Since it still won't be warm enough to go swimming for a bit, I thought I would at least tell you guys more about this diaper in case you're in the market and some things that I personally like about it and the brand! (In no particular order.)

*One size fits most babies 6-35+ lbs. (I love anything one size...When it comes to diapers, anyways.)

*Durable, more “solid” not “flimsy” like AppleCheeks' swim diaper. (Though it does look very comfy for that reason!) I'm hoping the BB (BestBottom) doesn't pill as easily.

*Waterproof outer layer to keep baby drier for longer. (Hopefully)

*Cross over snaps for little babies.

*4 different size rises for a better fit.

*Inner mesh so diaper dries faster and is more comfortable for baby than straight PUL against the skin.

*Functions like a regular cover, which makes poo clean ups easy. (Who wants to PULL OFF a poopy diaper from a wet baby?!)

*I like the idea of laying an insert inside the diaper for the car ride to wherever you're playing in the water. That way your seat won't get wet because of the waterproof outer layer and you it's one less thing to worry about putting the whole thing on your baby once you get there!

*The only thing I thought was strange about these so far is they cost more than the regular covers. Not by much, but still. Does mesh really cost that much?

Homesteading Update: Farm Friends & Spring Starts

             Hey folks! As any writer encounters from time to time, I've had a bit of writer's block lately. So, I bring to you another update in pictures. It's been a weird, somewhat busy week, and I've been very scatter-brained the past few days. You guys don't mind a bunch of pictures, right? We did finish the rabbit hutch, so I'm hoping I'll be able to get that post up for you guys next Monday! But, we are off to my parents house this weekend (have I mentioned 5,000 times that I almost always write my posts several days in advance, if not farther out than that?!), so I just do not have time to get to it this week, unfortunately. Sorry!

             I feel like I haven't shared many pictures of the critters lately, so here's a few! Miss Gabby, our newest addition to the farm, is there on the left. She's getting pudgy already! Not sure why. I don't feel like I overfeed her. Who knows. I didn't notice the way Mr.Bruce was staring at me on the right until I was putting this collage together. Ha ha! Silly boy. He's a little, erm, “possessive” still, of his food and I have to feed them separately. Crazy kids. He'll be getting a run for his money once she gets bigger than him, I'm sure. ;)

             Starting from the top left, there is Tawny. Of course she looked away as I was taking the picture. She's a sh**head in more than one way. I think I've mentioned it before recently, but she LOVES drinking from the hose because it drips like crazy. Well, I had to get a new sprayer head (oh darn!) so um, yah. It doesn't drip any more. She's not very happy about it. Seriously. She acts like a crackhead when she even sees the hose. She even pecked me the other day (and not softly!) when I was reaching for the sprayer! I wasn't very happy. She's a quirky little thing, and I can't stay mad at her long, though. I will have to try and remember to get a video of her sometime when I have the hose out.

             That little white fluffball masquerading as a chicken is our Silkie Bantam Francine. Currently aka Broody McBrooderson. She sure is a biotch when I try to check under her for new eggs/ones I don't want her sitting on, but she's been doing a good job so far. I just wish she were bigger so I could have left more eggs under her! XD Right now I have 4 of the other Easter Egger, Yasmine's, eggs under her. She lays faithfully, they're huge, and she's not really mean or anything, so we wouldn't mind having more chickens like that. ;)

             These 3 little chickies are part of our newish gang. We started out with 7, but I don't feel like talking about it. -_- The Silver-laced Wyandotte in front is Silver Fox, the Buff in the middle is Ducky, and the Golden-laced Wyandotte is Goldielocks. However, as you can see in the last picture, we still have one that needs named! She's a pretty little black and tan Easter Egger. Any ideas?

             Believe it or not, we've been doing a lot of seed starting and planting already! I just hope we don't regret it. :/ Starting them was mostly my idea. My husband insisted they (should be) fine planting outside. We'll see...

             Anyways, we've got a nice little set up for starting seeds in our sunroom. I just wish it got more light in there. Not terrible, but not great this time of year still. We've started quite a bit of cooler weather crops already, like broccoli, spinach, lettuces, etc. as well as herbs, though they're not taking off very quickly. I finally got smart and drew some diagrams of what we planted where so we wouldn't have to worry about the popsicle sticks bleeding or falling of the lids etc. etc. If I remember right, that stuff on the bottom right is called rock wool? Hubby found it on Amazon or something and decided to try it out. Basically it's like the little planting trays we already have, but you can reuse them! Pretty cool, right?!

             My father in-law found an AWESOME deal on a roto-tiller recently, so he came over and finished tilling up the little garden the other day. We've already transplanted some of the cooler weather plants that I listed above to out here. We also put our greenhouse over the majority of the first plants we put out there. That's actually where the dry spot is in the one picture, so I'm not sure what's up with that because you can see the condensation on the inside of it when it is on the ground.

It looks like grass, but that stuff growing underneath the line of red yarn is actually some wheat action! Pretty sure I already mentioned this too, but it will be for chicken feed. :) Still not sure about the clover that's supposed to be growing next to it. :/

             Have you guys planted anything yet or started any seedlings indoors?
