Bread Making: Not as scary as I thought!

I recently saw a fellow blogger write about finally baking bread and how she used to be afraid to do it, like me. She even posted the recipe she tried which is great because I’ve been looking for different ones to try. If I have the time to sell at our local farmers’ market this year, I have been looking for “healthier” baked goods to make. Most people that are at the market are there for veggies and healthy food, so I figured if I want to make some more money and make it worth my time, I should probably tailor my baked goods more to them as much as that pains me because my “fattening” ones are soooo good, if I do say so myself. ;) Anyhow, I didn’t end up using the recipe she used, but I was so tickled about how easy and well mine turned out I just had to share. So, if she (or any of her readers) happens to read this, I just had to share my experience too!
I found this recipe on allrecipes.com. If you’ve never been on their website, I highly suggest you do the next time you’re looking for recipes! It is my go to page when I’m looking for new ones. If interested, you can find the link to this particular bread recipe at the end of this post and I might put it on the recipes page.
Like I said, I’ve always been afraid of trying to make bread because it seems so time consuming, difficult, and, well, a pain in the rear. I finally got brave and tried it, though, because I ALWAYS make sure to try new baked goods before I sell them at the market. I don’t want to be selling crap products, after all! I’ll be honest, I’ve never been a fan of store bought whole wheat bread, but I just tried a slice of this bread and it is SO GOOD! It has a good amount of honey in it, so I’m sure that’s part of it, but it has such good flavor and texture! Even better, I had no problem following the recipe and it was pretty easy to make, to my surprise. Of course you have to wait for the dough to rise and all that, but that step didn’t take nearly as long as I expected. This recipe actually makes 3 loaves, so I divided it up and put two in the freezer for now. My husband and I go through a depressing amount of bread and we all know how pricey bread can be, SO, even with the extra cost of the bread flour I think I might start making this at least occasionally to save a little money here and there. Who doesn’t love saving a buck or two? ;)
                                                    Isn't it pretty?!

Doctor's Orders vs. Parents' Intuition

We hear warning after warning concerning child safety and when baby “should be” reaching certain milestones all the time as parents. Not many years ago pacifiers were still considered to be “bad” for baby, with the possibility of future dental problems and becoming too attached or reliant on the paci, thus making it more difficult to wean him/her off down the road. Studies are now showing that pacifiers can actually help prevent SIDS if given to a baby at bedtime…But researchers are now saying there is also a link between pacifier usage and an increased occurrence of ear infections. SIDS research also seems to be constantly coming out with new warnings and suggestions for preventing it. What gets me is there is still no known cause. That’s besides my point, though. A friend recently told me that it is now recommended that you pull your child’s crib at least 6 inches away from any wall to help increase air circulation, among the many other tips listed HERE.
I’ve been doing a bit of research lately on the whole “when to start feeding baby ‘real food’” debate. Years before I had my own baby, I used to think that even six months seemed too early to be feeding baby real food. Now that I have my daughter, I have found from my sifting through the internet that there are two main “sides” on this subject and people are very opinionated on both: before six months is ok as long as the baby seems ready vs. you should NOT feed baby anything but formula/breast milk before six months.
This last subject is what prompted me to write this post in the first place. My daughter’s pediatrician suggested I TRY to give her cereal close to her four month check-up (to see how she does with it), which is coming up in a couple of weeks. Myka is always watching my husband and I like a hawk when we eat, so I thought I would give it a try. However, I decided to get the opinions from friends and family on Facebook about a certain aspect of it AND made the mistake of asking about it on a certain babycenter group’s forum. I’m going to be somewhat of an adult about it and not mention what group it was, but let’s just say I didn’t appreciate their comments that basically insinuated that I (and my pediatrician) were not well educated and promptly removed myself from the group. Needless to say, I had mixed reviews. None of my Facebook friends or family mentioned anything about it being too soon to start feeding her cereal…but to be careful and watch for allergies. Ok. That’s fair. The people from the lovely babycenter group practically jumped down my throat saying she was way too young to give real food to and that I should wait until she’s at least six months old, and even though don’t give her cereal, mash up fruits and veggies.
I would say that 98 percent of the time I can see both sides of any given “story.” It’s a blessing AND a curse, let me tell you! So of course, after reading both sides of the argument, so to speak, I started second guessing myself. I especially hate when I do this because I have learned over the years that for the most part my intuition or “gut feeling” is usually correct. Yet I still have doubts sometimes and end up cursing myself after the fact when my original feeling was correct. That’s a whole other story, though. Back to my original point.
When and where do we draw the fine line between taking heed of doctors’ suggestions or orders and listening to what our gut is telling us, or our parental intuition in this case? Am I suggesting that you completely ignore what your doctor says? Of course not! It just seems to me in today’s society that we have become far too reliant on what doctors tell us without ever questioning it and not taking the time to do our own research and acting on what WE feel is right. Most people seem to be more willing to take the advice of a stranger than to do what they think is appropriate. So, while suggestions, recommendations, second opinions, etc. etc. are always good to at least hear and take into consideration, I ask that we start taking the time to tune in to what our heart, gut, or little voice in the back of our head is telling us. We wouldn’t be here today if our long, long ago ancestors hadn’t listened to it. ;)

(For the record, I have decided to try cereal with Myka periodically instead of every day. She did really well with it a couple of times, but other than that she was so mad she just wanted her bottle. I took that as a sign. She'll be ready when she's ready. ;)

Nap Time is Your Friend!

I have a feeling this might be a touchy subject with some and positive it will hit a nerve with others. You know what they say, though. You can’t please everyone!
It has come to my attention that there are quite a few moms (and dads, I’m sure) out there who complain about not having enough time to get everything done in the day, such as cleaning, laundry, dishes, and other yucky junk that NEEDS to be done. Now don’t get me wrong. I am not claiming to be “super mom” by any means. Of course I have days where I don’t get everything accomplished on my to-do list that I would like. As we all know, with kids, some days are just better than others.
As another “disclaimer”, yes, I only have one child and I am home with her all day for the time being. Yes, she is still young enough to take more than one nap throughout the day, therefore making it easier for me than some to get chores done. The following suggestions I am making would probably suit someone with 2 or 3 children, especially if at least one still takes naps. Any more than that, god speed. You have more patience than me! As I said in the beginning, I’m sure this will hit a nerve with some people and it is not my intention necessarily to tick anyone off. I’m also not claiming to know what YOUR home life is like. Everyone is different. Some of the ideas I’m going to list may just not be feasible for you personally. I just wanted to take a moment and perhaps make some people realize that THEY are creating their own time management issues, therefore THEY are the only ones who can fix it!

-Does your child(ren) still take naps? Great! Nap time is your friend! Utilize this time to do something PRODUCTIVE! I am not unfamiliar with the temptations of Facebook, or Pinterest, or whatever it is that you like doing in your spare time. Those can wait until after the kids are in bed. Think of it this way. Wouldn’t you feel so much better, while you’re lying in bed at night trying to fall asleep, knowing that you got everything (or even ALMOST everything) accomplished in the day that you had intended to do? What a weight off of your shoulders and one less thing to worry about! Heck, if you get a LOT done, that’s more free time for you the next day while the kids are sleeping. Bonus! So I ask you, put the computer (or other hobby you have) in time out during naptime. They will still be there later. I promise. ;)

Here is a just a short list of things you can accomplish during nap time:
-catch up on bills
-wash dishes
-do laundry
-pre-prep meals
-clean the house
-pluck your eyebrows (Yes, I’ve actually done this.)
-take a bath and shave those hairy legs!
-catch up on baby books/scrapbooks (I’m guilty of needing to do this.)
-write a blog post (I’m actually writing this as Myka takes her morning nap. I TRY to practice what I preach. ;)
-catch up on work if you are lucky enough to work from home
The list goes on and on.

Have a child (or children) who doesn’t take naps? That’s not a problem either! Most young children enjoy being included in adult activities with mommy and daddy. Give them simple tasks to help you out. Even if they’re not actually helping you and you’re just keeping them occupied, they will enjoy spending time with you and think they are helping. Doing activities like this should boost their self-esteem and self-worth.

Here is another short list of things you can have your children do with you to help (or at least keep them occupied):

-Give him/her a dust rag and have her help you dust tables, furniture, etc. etc. off.
-If old enough, let him/her stand on a stool and help you rinse or dry dishes off.
-Maybe it was just me, but I always wanted to help my grandma when she baked cookies. If you’re kids are the same way, have him/her do something simple like help you get the measuring utensils out that you need, or let them pour the ingredients into the mixture.
-Want to work out, but think it’s impossible to do with rambunctious kids? Have them work out with you! Even if they’re just dancing around being silly, they will have fun and burn off extra energy, which is always a good thing, right? Maybe they’ll even go to bed early. Again, extra time for YOU! Even though my daughter still takes naps, I sometimes sit her in her swing or bouncer close by and make faces at her while I’m working out. She seems to be entertained by me sweating my butt off.
-If you have lots of rocks and twigs in your yard like we do, have him/her help you pick them up before you mow.

How do you manage your time? (Or do you? Ha!) I’d especially love to hear from those of you who have more than 2 children and/or work also.
